At Mellow Oaks Academy, our Grade 2 learners have been busy exploring the exciting world of measurement. Instead of rulers and tape measures, they discovered that their very own hands and shoes can be powerful measuring tools!
Learning Through Play
The students learned that measurement isn’t just about numbers—it’s about comparing sizes and finding creative ways to understand the world around us. By using their hands and shoes, they could measure objects in the classroom and playground in a way that felt fun and natural.

Hands as rulers: A desk might be “five hands long.”

Shoes as measuring sticks: The classroom carpet could be “ten shoes wide.”
This activity helped them see that measurement is all around us, and that we can use everyday items to figure out how big or small something is.
Discoveries and Giggles
The children quickly noticed that not all hands and shoes are the same size. A tall student’s hand might cover more space than a smaller student’s hand. This led to lively discussions about why measurements can change depending on the tool we use. It was a wonderful way to introduce the idea of standard units of measurement—like centimetres and meters—while still keeping the lesson playful.
