Yesterday, our Grade 11 Life Science learners engaged in a fascinating practical lesson — the dissection of a lamb kidney. This hands-on activity allowed students to move beyond theory and explore the intricate anatomy of one of the body’s vital organs.
The lesson objective was clear: by the end of the session, learners should be able to identify and label the anatomical structures of the kidney while also demonstrating growth in their investigative and scientific inquiry skills.
With scalpels in hand and curiosity at heart, our learners carefully examined the kidney’s outer cortex, inner medulla, and renal pelvis — gaining a deeper appreciation for how this organ functions to filter blood and maintain homeostasis.
This practical not only strengthened their understanding of human biology but also nurtured essential skills such as observation, analysis, and scientific communication. It was inspiring to see learners working collaboratively, asking thoughtful questions, and making connections between classroom knowledge and real-world application.
At Mellow Oaks Academy, we believe that learning by doing is the key to unlocking deeper understanding. The kidney dissection was a perfect example of how experiential learning empowers students to become confident, capable investigators of the natural world.
