On 12 February 2026, the Grade 10 Life Science learners of Mellow Oaks Academy embarked on an unforgettable excursion to the Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens. This outing was more than just a field trip—it was a chance to practically apply classroom knowledge in a living, breathing ecosystem.
Applying the Quadrant Method
Armed with scientific curiosity and notebooks, students used the quadrant method to measure and analyze the biodiversity of the gardens. This technique allowed them to assess the health and status of the ecosystem by carefully recording the presence of different species within defined sample areas.

Grass & Plant Identification: Learners identified a variety of grasses and plants, using precise scientific terminology to classify and describe them.
